Serena Williams’s Early Life

Serena Williams was born on September 26th, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan and is the youngest child of Richard Williams and Oracene Price. Serena and her elder sister Venus had first been trained by their parents until both sisters joined the tennis academy of Rick Macci in West Palm Beach, Florida. However, in 1995, Serena’s father Richard decided to pull his daughters out of Macci’s academy and started coaching them himself again. The same year, at the age of 14, Serena started her professional career and, by the end of 1997, she was already ranked number 99 in the world.

Serena Williams became the No. 1 tennis player in the world for the first time on July 8th, 2002 and has won numerous Grand Slam Titles, Olympic Gold Medals and WTA Tour Championships. She is one of only 6 women who were ever able to achieve the Career Grand Slam. In 1999, together with her sister Venus, she helped the American national team to win the Fed Cup. Serena was named the Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 2015. She is considered to be the greatest female tennis player ever by many journalists and sport experts.
