Right Balance of a Tennis Racquet for Beginner
As a coach, finding the right balance of a tennis racquet for beginner players is usually the first real turning point for the player. When I take a head light racquet out of a players hand and put in something that suites their game better, like a head heavy racquet, their strokes begin to click. Their confidence soars and the rest of their game is set down a better path. So what does it take to find the right balance of a tennis racquet for beginner players? Let’s explore some options.
What is balance?
The balance describes where the weight is distributed on the racquet. A racquet with a heavier head is appropriately called a head heavy racquet, sometimes referred to as HH. A racquet where the weight is in the grip is called a head light racquet, sometimes referred to as an HL. A racquet where the weight seems to be in the middle, or evenly distributed is called evenly balanced (EB).
What do the pros use?
Since a professional tennis player can get the fantastic power from their technique, they tend to gravitate toward head light racquets that are on the heavy side in terms of weight. These racquets are very maneuverable at the net and can react to a change of direction easier as opposed to a head heavy racquet.
Which should I buy?
As a coach, I always tell players to playtest, and playtest each category. Finding the right balance of a tennis racquet for beginner players begins with playtesting. Demo a head heavy a head light and an even balanced racquet. What do you like about each? Are you losing one aspect of your game with a certain racquet (i.e. power, control, fatigue)? Ask yourself these questions to help you narrow down the right category of racquet for you.
